From Classical To Calypso

Hello Music Friends,

This video is an awesome display of how well a solo steel drum can blend with a full orchestra.
I often tell people that the steel drum is capable of playing ANY type of music.  Although the public is generally accustomed to hearing  steel drums  in "beach" style music or playing  tropical rhythms, they seldom get to hear virtuosos express themselves on the instrument. I often say that the instrument has the notes to make music but it is the skill of the player that brings it all to life. Liam Teague is such a virtuoso who expresses himself on the steel drum. In addition to being a standout musician he is also very well spoken. I think that those two attributes make him an asset to the art form.  Have a listen as he joins the Taiwan National Symphony in a piece that was written especially for him.

C'est Magnifique-BP Renegades French Tour 09

Hello Music Friends,

I had the pleasure of witnessing a standing ovation and triple encore afforded to Trinidad based steel orchestra BP Renegades after they delighted concert goers in the French city of Angouleme. The Renegades repertoire consisted of Baroque pieces by Schubert and Bach as well as reggae songs by Bob Marley,(The crowd sang the chorus of " No Woman no Cry" as the musicians played) timeless Kitchener calypsos and "Groovey Soca" hits by Destra and Krosfyah amongst others. Row G seat 3 gave me an upclose and personal view of the band. I was so proud of the bands performance and the hospitable reception they got from the French audience. That night was a proud moment for Trinidad and for the steel band art form.
